Start with how numbers are organized and where they belong. Number charts show counting patterns in rows and columns; number lines show values along a scale.
Choose a representation that helps explain the skill. Whole-number charts and lines support early counting, while fraction and signed-number lines extend the same idea of equal spacing to later grades.
Use the representation deliberately
On a ten-column chart, moving right adds 1 and moving down a row adds 10. On a number line, the value of a step depends on the labeled scale, not on how large the diagram appears.
Begin with a few missing chart cells or an easy whole-number line. For a greater challenge, read quarter-unit steps or signed integer positions. Ask the learner to explain the clues that identify a value before checking the key.
