Connect number patterns with place-value strategies. These second-grade selections focus on charts, number lines, and addition and subtraction with whole numbers.
Begin with calculations within 100 and ask the learner to explain the tens and ones. Larger-number work can use drawings or place-value reasoning rather than requiring a memorized procedure immediately.
Choose a focused skill
- Use a number chart to explore rows, columns, and counting patterns.
- Read a number line marked in tens from 0 to 100.
- Choose addition or subtraction within 100; extend to within 1,000 when place-value strategies are ready.
For 41 − 18, subtract 10 to reach 31, then subtract 8 to reach 23. Checking 23 + 18 = 41 links the two operations. Counting in second grade extends to 1,000, so a 1–120 chart is a useful support rather than the whole counting goal.
